New york trip

We plan our travel (+ budget for the trips) at least 12 months in advance and for this one we had a figure of £1,800 in mind. We originally planned to stay for 7 nights and pay for the hotel with Reward Points. But then we decided to add another two nights and ‘buy’ a few extra points to cover the cost. The extra nights ended up costing around £185, still making it a great price to pay for 9 nights in a central Manhattan hotel. We booked the flights during an airline sale period and paid £463.50 for each return trip. I probably could have found tickets for less, but I much prefer a morning flight out (both ways), as anything else messes with my body clock too much!

The hotel we stayed in had a fully functional kitchen + provided a buffet breakfast, which really helped us to keep food costs down. We grocery shopped at Trader Joes for fruit and snacks etc, and then ate from street carts, delis or hole in the wall pizza joints. We only went out for one sit down ‘posh’ meal.

We either walked or used the subway for the whole trip, although we did take one taxi from Jamaica Station before our flight home . The Air Train to JFK wasn’t working and the buses supposed to be provided did not appear to be turning up! It was 6am in the morning and it was worth the $15 not to miss our flight :)

Before our trip we booked the ferry to Liberty Island $38/£23 and tickets to a NY Jets Game $174/£106.

Trip costs:
– £185.00 Hotel
– £927.00 Return Flights
– £63.95 Airport Parking
Sub Total: £1,175.95
– £18.95 Airport (breakfast and water)
– £430.00 Transport & Food
– £23.00 Ferry
– £106.00 Football tickets
Sub Total: £577.95 ($918)

Total cost: £1,753.90

We also spent money on clothing and Christmas gifts, but kept these costs separate from our travel spending.

As a general rule of thumb we budget for $100 a day when travelling, and this time it worked out….it doesn’t always!

About Laura: In 2014 my husband & I downsized our home to speed up our quest for Financial Freedom. We swapped our large three bed house, for a small (< 700 sq ft), two bed apartment to clear our mortgage and give us enough budget freedom to travel and still save for the future.

Liberty Island

We took the ferry to Liberty (and Ellis) Island yesterday. We didn’t go up the Statue, but still had a lot of fun walking around the base of it! The view of Manhattan is pretty special too.

Ferry tickets $18 (each) – pre-booked with Statue Cruises

New York 2014

Hi Guys! We arrived safely Saturday afternoon and we seem to have been on a non stop walk ever since! I think my November goal to walk  15 miles+ has already been achieved!

We went to see the NY Jets play football on Sunday (Go Jets – sorry DB40!), and then Monday and Tuesday were spent in and around the shops! I purchased a couple of tops to add to my wardrobe, but so far that’s it.

I’m tracking our spending on this trip (as usual) and will do a full round-up when we get home. We have a mini kitchen in our hotel room (+ a hotel with breakfast included)  and this is helping to keep the food costs down.

I hope everyone is ok! Back soon with a few more photos :)
