Grocery Spending #1 {April 2012} — 13 Comments

  1. It LOOKS like a LOT of food but I know how quickly it goes. I just did a good shop this week and it should last til the middle of the month because both Kazi and Michael are away all weekend!

    • Laura, I have to admit I’m impressed with how great you deal with grocery budget becaue I have always the same problem to answer the question: if my grocery budget for one week is i.e. 50EUR and I have everything from my list in my cart and it’s smaller than 50EUR, should I:
      a) pay for what I have in my cart, go out and be happy I saved a few eur;
      b) buy something what is on sale that day (and I’m sure the price is lower than usually and I use that thing regularly, like sugar, flour, shampoo, etc.-things which are always useful and won’t be wasted)
      c) any other idea appreciated.
      There was a time when I thought “ok, when you have money left it means you overbudgeted your groceries” but sometimes I think “ok, next weekend our friends are coming for a bbq so I can take this bottle of wine and still be within my budget”. Honestly, I’m always confused. What do you think about that?

    • Hi Shovellicious
      I treat my grocery money as a monthly amount. So if I see something that we use on offer I will stockpile it – my grocery spending often starts the month higher and then I reduce it as the month goes by.
      If say I’ve spent £170 in weeks 1-3 of a month then I’ll try to keep my spending for £30 for the last week – so buy only essentials that week
      -I always research the stores before I shop so I often know when something is on offer.
      -I always allow for any socialising in my budget

      I hope this helps :)
