Grocery Spending Update June 2011 #2

Every month I try to keep my grocery spending below £250 (preferably £230). For most of the year I’ve struggled to hit this goal, but this month, so far so good.

My current system for grocery shopping (because to stay within budget I think you have to have a system) is a once a week trip to the farm shop for produce and eggs and a once a week trip to a supermarket. I’ve stopped shopping in between these visits, so if we run out of something midweek, then we go without. This is really helping to keep the budget in check.

I’m also still menu planning, which at times gets tedious, but it really keeps my costs down…..it also stops my two adult children from eating the chicken ear marked for tomorrows dinner!

Onto my figures for the month so far;

Week 1: £46.49
Week 2: £61.00

Total £107.49/£230

One happy girl…..so far :)

Let me know, are you managing to keep to your budget this month?

    Looking good!

    I think we are all eating less around here because of the heat. That’s great for our budget.

    I’ve also stopped going to the store if we run out before the next shopping day – it’s made a big difference in our food budget. It also helps me think more carefully about what I am going to need when I do go shopping, so I’m more efficient all around.

    This week we will starting getting food from the garden. I’m looking forward to not having to buy lettuce or spinach!

    Hi Laura! I just checked out your blog and it is wonderful. I wish we had met sooner!

    I also struggle to keep the weekly grocery budget in check. My bf and I have just started shopping at COSTCO (our warehouse club) every 2 weeks as the size of produce available makes it a better value. I’m with you on the system of if-it-runs-out-no-more-til-next-time. That being said, we still visit our local farmer’s market for fresh fruits & vegetables weekly. Eating healthy is not always cheap, but I wouldn’t change our diets to save dollars.

    That’s what I’ve started to do also (not making extra trips during the week) and it really does work!! Because we all know that if you run into the store for just 1 or 2 things you end up buying 5 or 6 or 12 things instead!!
