Is my gift budget too high?

I'm having an ongoing discussion with hubby about the amount of money we budget for gifts; I think £840 a year is far too high, he disagrees.

I come at the whole gift buying thing from an anti consumerism point of view and would really like to a) reduce the amount we spend and b) mainly buy Charity gifts.

I'm sure that if I had a conversation with other family members they would happily agree to a limit on gift cost as I'm sure most of them are thinking exactly the same as I am, however hubby thinks we will look mean!

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this? :-)

  1. I think it all depends on how many people/gifts you usually buy. That amount is almost $1400 Cdn. which is my Christmas budget for 4 kids, and other family members. The rest of the year birthday, holiday, etc gifts come out of our regular budget. In a few months though I'll be redoing that budget to include ALL gifts in it.

  2. I agree it depends on the number of people and their shopping habits. While I've gotten my family to cut back (I have a huge family), I can't seem to get my spouse's family to cut back. I think a $30 gift for my birthday is fine, they shop along the lines of $100.
