A Simple Wardrobe

In 2009 I didn't buy any new clothes and had a really good clear out of my wardrobe.

At times this challenge was really difficult to stick to, but in the main I found it ok. I realised that I don't need or want lots of clothes. The few items of clothing I have are based on a three colours; black, grey and white. Very classic, and maybe boring to some, but to me a perfect, simple, capsule wardrobe; I never have to worry a colours clashing and I can mix and match easily every day.

This year I have a small clothing budget of £240, which I'm using to buy five new items; as I no longer hit the shops every weekend, it's a lot easier to plan where my money is going and stick to my budget, I also have £30 in shop vouchers which will buy me some new underwear.

What about you, what are your clothes buying plans for 2010?

  1. I work in an similar way - basic colours, not too many prints and work the accessories. Having less clothes also makes it easier to get dressed in the morning.

  2. Be very careful what clothes you toss. The old rule of thumb is if you haven't worn it in a year, toss it. I disagree. With the price of clothing and shoes, that stuff you toss may come in handy later on and you may not have the money to buy new again. That's what happened to me.

I donated some coats last year thinking I could buy new. But when the time came this year to buy a new winter coat, I really didn't have the money and regretted giving my stuff away! Plus, I am back at work in an office and need my business clothes again. Thankfully, I still have them. Also, I got invited to a wedding and still had clothes in my closet that were suitable (plus shoes!)

My new advice: do not donate, sell or give away your clothes because you may not have the money in the future (inflation) to replace them. Think very, very carefully.

  3. Im loving Primark at the moment for casuals and smart office/business casual. I got some nice smart casual jumpers for £4.00 each that are nice enough to wear for work, and I bought a lovely petrol blue blouse for £10.00 that I can wear for work and wear with jeans and a couple of work skirts £5.00 each!!!

I begrudge spending money on work clothes so Primark comes in handy.

  4. I don't buy clothes that much at all.. I've bought one thing so far this year with vouchers bought for me for Christmas/.. I try to buy things that will stay in 'fashion' regardless...
