5 year plan - Achieving your dreams

If you could go on a dream holiday tomorrow, and money wasn't an issue, where would you go? Would you go to the sea, on safari, perhaps skiing? We are all different and would probably all pick different things to do.

My dream vacation would be an extended stay in New York. No sunbeds, no quiet, just noise, people and beautiful architecture,. To some this may not be their idea of escape, but to me, it's exactly what I want. I like to live by the sea, and holiday in cities. I don't like the countryside for my holidays, don't tell frugal trenches, and skiing and I parted ways on a horrendous school trip 20+ years ago.

I never thought I would ever be able to go on this trip, however over the last few years, as the debt has slowly been diminishing, I've realised that it is possible. It's possible to do anything if you put your mind to it. I've realised that if you look after your money wisely and don't spend it constantly on crap, you can do anything you want to do.

-------------------------------

In comments yesterday Lisa asked me about my 5 year plan, as she, like me, has been tackling debt for many years and wasn't sure what to do at the end, when it's all paid off. I understand just how she feels. At the moment over 50% of my income goes to debt repayment and it'll be a big thing for me suddenly having it all available for use.
Well Lisa, to come up with my 5 year plan, and you should try this too, I just took a piece of paper and wrote down my ideal lifestyle. It can be anything, as we are all different, and its not about having loads of money, its about doing what matters to you. Once I had this written down, I charted some goals that would set me on track over the next five years to achieving this lifestyle. Please let me know what you come up with :)

  1. Hi there-I think having a plan is important to reaching those all important goals, I so agree. I'm hoping that I will be debt free in 5 years time, but I'm blessed in that I already work part time, enjoy my job and I'm around for my kids before and after school-if I can keep this up for the forseeable future, this suits me fine!!

  2. I've got three and five year goals. Part of those goals are creating a lifestyle where I am not always worried about money. Getting everything on track so it runs relatively smoothly will be a big step for me.

  5. I've done something really similar, like a life map, I cut pictures and words up from magazines and put them down on paper to draw a picture of things I want in life, things I want to change, what's important to me and things I'd like to do- it really helps me focus to see it all in front of me!

And I am with you on the NY trip, 6 months there just being part of it all is my dream, sitting in Central Park, riding the subway downtown, walking the Brooklyn Bridge and people watching in a coffee/bookstore, absolute heaven!
