What to do?

Is it too early to start thinking about my life after debt?
Shanti posted this week about how finance problems are not instantly resolved once debt is paid off, that there are still things to sort out and make decisions on. I agree.

I'm committed to staying in my current job until at least January 2010, after that though I'm not sure what to do. My debt will be paid off by then, however, I will not have a lot of personal money. Jointly with my husband I will be ok, but I do need to protect myself. I plan to spend the rest of my life with him, however things happen, I've been there before, have the t-shirt, and I'm not ever going to be homeless and penniless again. I need some personal savings.

As I see it I have two choices:
  1. Stay in current job and improve work/life balance - It pays well, but can be stressful. The stress causes me to over eat, which leaves me with low energy levels, which means the slightest problem causes more stress - a vicious circle
  2. Find another job which pays well- Over forty, overweight and worked for the same company for fifteen years, not easy!

Writing it down makes me realise that I may have to go with option 1. The recent work restructure may help with the stress levels, I'm in ongoing talks with my boss about this, so all I need to do is find a way to apply my debt payoff mindset to my diet and I'm set!

  1. you said, about finding another job:
Over forty, overweight and worked for the same company for fifteen years, not easy!

    Poppycock! Rubbish!
I found a job at the age of 57, overweight (I can't stand to look at myself in the mirror!) and I have been working since I was 16. AND I had been out of work for a few years and hadn't been on the job scene either.
But I just picked myself up, dyed my salt & pepper hair a bit, put on some makeup, went on an interview, held my head high, and got hired.

There are NO limits to what ALL of us can accomplish.

    No negative thoughts here.

    OK?

PS: now I'm losing weight, dressing up a bit better and a whole new future has opened up for me. Never too late for anything.

  2. i'm sitting hear laughing because when I wrote option 2 I knew you'd be along to kick my bum..I just didn't think it would be so quick...lol I probably wrote it knowing thats what I needed.

Option 1 is really the easy option, and I know that i really need to go for option 2.
    thank you cinzea :)

  3. There is also though the option of knowing the end is in sight with Option 1 when you move. I sometimes think better the devil you know.

I am treading water in my job, until we move South and I leave. If we weren't moving, I'd be looking for something else, but I make it work for me as much as I can until then.

Since I started my journey to debt free living . simple living , my attitude towards my job has changed so much, it is merely a method of getting some money in at the end of the month. I go to work, I do the best I can, I come home and forget about it (most of the time).

However, length of service for one company is viewed positively. Your age and weight will be of no significance to any company worth working for.

  5. I think there is no other choice but to reward yourself with your paid off debt by finding something you love. We all owe it to ourselves! However, if you are leaving 6 or 12 months later, then you might decide to stay.

Life is about a balance. Being somewhere another couple of years, where you are unhappy is never balanced.

You are not defined by your weight or age, just by the wonderful person you are.

Reminds me of an old joke: I maybe fat but your ugly and I can lose weight!

Serioulsy though being overwieght generally doesn't affect your carear as much as you might think. The wife has battled the bulged for years with some sucess and it hasn't affected her carear at all.

Dressing stylish and having a good attitude will work wonders for ones carear.
