I'm mad at myself, really mad and I'm considering drastic action. I've been thinking of challenging myself to no spending, except on essentials, for the next six months. I know this has been done before by other bloggers/writers for longer, but it might be what I need to get me back on the straight and narrow and nearer to my goal. I'm getting so close to the end of this debt free journey, 19 months to go, and the key to my success so far has been constantly challenging myself along the way. I have to stop myself from becoming jet lagged.
If I do this, the problem I will have is deciding whats essential and whats not.

OH man, if you can pull that off you'd be swimmin' in the dollar bills!!! haha...
I actually gave up all spending, except necessities, for Lent (over 2 months) and it REALLY made me realize how:
a) i didn't "need" all of the stuff i was getting
b) i could save $300/mo no problem at all.
and c) how easy it was after the first cple weeks it was to do - your mind just shuts down that part of the brain and it's actually kind of relaxing not having to make decisions anymore ;)
Anyways, this comment is getting longer and longer by the second, so i'll stop here.
I say you should try it out for 1 month for now, then take a break, and go from there :)
thanks for visiting J! Love you blog by the way :)
The reason I went for 6 months is to make it a real challenge, I've done a month before so I wanted this to really stand out and it fits in with my current goal to really simplify my life.
Did I miss something? Why are you mad at yourself?
Doing a challenge really does make a difference to the way you look at things, You will be able to do it!
thanks louise :)
dd, I've been spending far too much lately and I can feel myself falling into the 'buying this won't hurt' mode again, so I'm stopping it right now!
I'm not caught up on your blog, but re: buying essentials only, here is a book to read:
http://www.amazon.com/Not-Buying-Year-Without-Shopping/dp/0743269365/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-0978574-5764709?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1191444325&sr=1-1
The author decided not to buy anything unless essential for a year. (It is an ok read from the library but I'd be disappointed if I had bought it new hardcover went it first came out)
There were good discussions about what is essential or not (like qtips). Author pd off $8000 cc debt and lost weight (no ice cream bought and more biking instead of subway/cabbing).
