My make-up budget

Shanti recently did a post about her budget busters and one of the items on her list was make-up. This got me thinking about my budget and how I never even budget for make-up, and yet I wear it! Admittedly I don't wear alot, but I do wear it.

I only have five products that I use without fail, anything else is generic and bought from the supermarket with my grocery shopping. Make-up is not that important to me, growing up in the country, surrounded by animals, I never really got into the whole make-up thing.

My 5 products:
  1. Maybeline Great Lash (£4.99)
  2. Clinique Foundation ((£18.50)
  3. Clinique Concealer (£15.00)
  4. Clinque Moisturiser (£26.00)
  5. Body Shop Coconut Butter (£12.00)

Annually, I will use 3 mascaras, 2 foundations, 3 Cocoa Butter and 1 of everything else. I use it all sparingly. I try to get the butter as gifts for my birthday or Christmas, all my family know I love it.

Now the reason I haven't budgeted for it, is probably that I have a secret stock of it in my wardrobe, bought in New York on my honeymoon. I bought all the products in NY, out of my trip spending money, because it's so much cheaper there. The Clinique foundation is approx $19.50 in Sephora and the mascara is approx. $6.50 in Duane Reade. Please correct me if this is wrong.

Going forward I have enough products to last me until the end of the year and then I will need to add a small line in my budget, perhaps £10 a month, to cover the cost of these items.

  1. How funny - we use very similar product and I too have very laid back approach to make up. Daily I use a cucumber moisturizer (from Holland and Barrat) that cost 99p and is a HUGE tub. I didn't notice the switch from clinique. But I have kept with my clinique for concealer and foundation. Apart from that I use a very cheap lipstick - Heather Shimmer from Rimmel and maybeline great lash. My make up tends to last me 2-3 months and I too as for it for Christmas and Birthday. Generally I have to buy 2 clinique's a year and 1-2 lipsticks.
It's funny, I thought I was the "norm" but I've recently seen (now that I live in London) how much city/ladies who lunch (aka my friends in Surrey) wear and spend -several regularly spending £50 + a month!!
My one love is Amarige perfume which is about £35-£40 although I do make it last, even though I use it 4-5x a week. My current bottle has been with me since 2005 - not sure how but somehow it lasts that long!!

  2. hi frugal, I might try that moisturizer, thanks for the tip.
For lips I use vaseline. For perfume I rely on the hubby. I love Hugo red ;)

  3. We share a guilty pleasure - I'm a sucker for clinique makeup and moisturizer... I really don't think the cheap stuff compares.

  4. How funny, swap Clinique for Revlon Colourstay & that's pretty much me too!

I do use lipstick, eyeshadow & blush too though, but only for work days.
